It is an unpleasant answer for a supplement manufacturer. However, we are publishing this information because "testosterone boosters" are among the most hyped products in Indian wellness, and you need to be aware of which parts are real before purchasing something. This guide will distinguish between the ingredients that have actual human trials and those that only exist thanks to marketing, as well as explain what can really help boost T levels.

What Is a Testosterone Booster?

A testosterone booster is a non-prescription supplement said to increase the body’s natural testosterone production. Do Testosterone Boosters Really Work?

The evidence says most testosterone boosters do not work as advertised. The most-cited analysis on this question is a 2019 study in the World Journal of Men's Health, 'Testosterone Boosting' Supplements Composition and Claims Are not Supported by the Academic Literature. Researchers at the University of Southern California examined 50 of the best-selling testosterone-boosting supplements containing 109 different ingredients.

These results were direct. Approximately 90% of the supplements made a claim about increasing testosterone levels, yet fewer than 25% provided any evidence for this claim. They were often loaded with excessive amounts of vitamins and minerals compared to their recommended intake limits. According to lead researcher, Dr Mary Samplaski, "they [the supplements] just contain some vitamins and minerals and do nothing for increasing testosterone."

This does not mean that all of the ingredients used in these supplements are completely ineffective. Instead, it highlights the overall overpromise of this group of supplements and how much the effectiveness of the supplement depends on what exactly is in it. Which Testosterone Booster Ingredients Have Real Evidence?

Only a small number of testosterone booster ingredients have consistent human trial data, and the two strongest are ashwagandha and fenugreek. A systematic review in Advances in Nutrition examined 13 herbs across 32 randomised controlled trials and found that fenugreek seed extract and ashwagandha root extract were the only ones with positive, repeatable effects on testosterone in men.

How strong is the ashwagandha evidence really?

It certainly has the strongest case out of all the ingredients mentioned here, yet the statistics need to be put into perspective. The growth that was observed in clinical studies ranged between 15–17% and occurred in a period of 8 to 16 weeks mostly in stressed, overweight or previously inactive males. This is clearly a noticeable improvement, yet it makes up only a small percentage of the results achieved via testosterone therapy and far from the miraculous transformations one would expect from advertisements.

There is actually an explanation to why ashwagandha outperforms other ingredients – it consistently reduces the levels of cortisol, the primary stress hormone. High cortisol levels inhibit testosterone production, which means that the plant works through the reduction of stress instead of increased testosterone synthesis. Does fenugreek actually raise testosterone?

Fenugreek is the most interesting case, because the evidence has recently become less certain rather than more. Older trials were encouraging, but a 2026 systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised placebo-controlled trials found only a small effect on total testosterone, no reliable effect on free testosterone, and concluded that "current evidence does not support clinical or commercial testosterone-boosting claims".

The distinction between total and free testosterone matters here. Free testosterone is the portion actually available to your tissues, so a change in total testosterone without a change in free testosterone may not translate into how you feel. Fenugreek is not a scam ingredient, but it is a "small and uncertain" ingredient, and any brand describing it as clinically proven is overstating the case.

Why Do Most Testosterone Boosters Fail?

Most testosterone boosters fail for reasons that have nothing to do with biology and everything to do with how the product was built. Five problems account for almost all of it.

1.   Ingredients with no evidence. Tribulus and similar "hero" ingredients appear on labels because they are cheap and familiar, not because trials support them.

2.   Proprietary blends. When a label lists a 750 mg "men's power blend" without naming each amount, there is no way to know whether the ashwagandha inside is 600 mg or 20 mg.

3.   Underdosing. Even a good ingredient fails below the trial dose, and trial doses are specific - ashwagandha research typically uses standardised extract, not raw powder.

4.   Too many ingredients, too little of each. A 12-herb formula in one tablet almost guarantees that nothing inside reaches a useful amount.

That last point is the one most articles skip. Testing is usually done in the morning, when levels are highest, and repeated before any conclusion is drawn.

Harvard also points out that a man's testosterone level drops by about 1–2% annually starting from his 40s, which is just a part of ageing and not a disorder.
